COVID-19: OYEWO CALLS FOR CALM, URGED CITIZENS TO OBSERVE SOCIAL DISTANCING, PROPER HYGIENE

The Lawmaker representing Irepodun/Olorunda/Orolu/Osogbo federal Constituency, Hon. Olubukola Oyewo has asked Nigerians to obey all directives and precautions issued by the authorities on coronavirus.

Since the December outbreak in Wuhan, China, the new coronavirus has spread rapidly, with more than 294,000 confirmed cases in 186 countries, including Nigeria, as of mid March.

The lawmaker in a statement issued by his media office, urged all persons including religious gathering to observe all the necessary precautions against the pandemic, and to follow the guidelines for combating the disease.

Oyewo cautioned Muslim and Christian faithfuls against attending religious programmes if they are experiencing symptoms such as respiratory problems, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. He also urged religious organizations to abide by the guidelines and precautions stipulated by the authorities including suspending gathering of over 50 persons as advised by state governements.

He advised, “If you think you may have been exposed to a person with COVID-19 and have symptoms, before going to a doctor’s office or emergency room, call ahead and tell them about your symptoms and any recent travel history. Additionally, preventative measures are your first line of defense. The best way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to practice good hygiene and to make these CDC recommendations part of your routine: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing; if soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

“Also, always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid close contact with people who are sick. Stay home when you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow, rather than into your hands. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.”

The Lawmaker however commended the Governor of the State of Osun, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola for the giant strides in preventing the outbreak in the State, and the efforts of the various committees constituted by the State government to decisively deal with the situation.
